IV Sedation

What is Intravenous (IV) Sedation Dentistry?

Dr. Kwan M. Lee is licensed and certified for IV sedation since 2010. Since then, he has completed more than 500 hours of sedation cases without any single incident. He is one of a very limited number of general dentists who offer IV sedation and can complete most or all of your dentistry. IV sedation is offered to the anxious, fearful or very young patients. Sedative medications are slowly titrated through IV line and you will fall into the sleep and yet you will be able to breathe at your own and respond to the doctor’s voice. After recovery, you would not remember anything from the procedures such as pain or sounds.

Am I a good candidate for IV sedation?

Any patient, from child to adult, who experiences dental anxiety is a good candidate for IV sedation dentistry. If you have any of the following fears or concerns, ask your doctor about sedation dentistry as an option for your next dental treatment:

  • Extreme dental anxiety, or fear of visiting the dentist

  • Fear of needles and/or shots

  • Past traumatic dental experience

  • Inability to handle the smells or noises at a dentist's office

  • Overly sensitive teeth, a strong gag reflex, or trouble getting numb

  • Need for a more complex dental treatment

  • Self-consciousness about one's teeth

  • Desire for a more comfortable dental treatment

Is this safe?

IV sedation is very safe when carried out under the supervision of a specially-trained dentist. Dr. Lee has been specially-trained and certified for IV sedation and Dr. Lee has been doing IV sedation since 2010 with more than 500 hours of IV sedation without a single incident.

Does my insurance cover for IV sedation?

Most of your dental insurances cover for IV sedation; however, you would check your insurance since there are some coverage restrictions.

Will I feel anything during my treatment?

In most cases, patients do not feel anything. There is very little discomfort, and many patients wake up feeling relaxed and comfortable with almost no memory of the treatment.
